squad list before confirmation
that a deal has been struck to sign the Everton defender.
UEFA knows something we all don't know regarding John Stones and Manchester City's pursuit of the Everton defender.
City have been trying to land Stones, 22, all summer ahead of Pep Guardiola's first season in charge, though Everton's reported asking price of £50m has been a stumbling block.
However, although neither club has announced a deal has been struck, UEFA has jumped the gun by naming the defender in City's Champions League squad on their website.
The deadline for City to submit their squad for the Champions League squad passed at midnight, with UEFA subsequently publishing the list of names.
UEFA has confirmed City meant to submit Stones as their player, pointing at an imminent deal.
"He was in the squad list we received from Manchester City," a UEFA spokesperson said. "The deadline was yesterday and the player was in the squad. He has been registered to play [for City].
"We are double-checking now as we have had a lot of calls about this."
City face Steaua Bucherest in the first leg of their Champions League playoff next Tuesday in Romania, before the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on 24 August.
