Labor productivity in
the U.S. fell less than previously estimated in the fourth quarter of
2015, according to a report released by the Labor Department on
Thursday.
The report said productivity fell by 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter
compared to the previously reported 3.0 percent decrease. Productivity
had been expected to be revised to show a steeper 3.2 percent drop.
The smaller than previously estimated drop in productivity, a measure of
output per hour, primarily reflected an upward revision to the pace of
output growth.
The Labor Department said the increase in output was upwardly revised to
1.0 percent from just 0.1 percent. Hours worked climbed by 3.2 percent
compared to the previously reported 3.3 percent increase.
Despite the revision, the drop in productivity in the fourth quarter
still reflects a downturn versus the 2.0 percent growth seen in the
third quarter.
The report also said the increase in unit labor costs in the fourth
quarter was downwardly revised to 3.3 percent from 4.5 percent.
Economists had expected an upward revision to 4.7 percent.
Hourly compensation climbed a downwardly revised 1.1 percent compared to
the previously reported 1.3 percent growth.
The increase in real hourly compensation, which takes changes in
consumer prices into account, was also downwardly revised to 0.9 percent
from 1.1 percent.
The jump in unit labor costs in the fourth quarter still reflects a
notable acceleration from a revised 0.4 percent uptick in the third
quarter.
Compared to the same quarter a year ago, productivity edged up by 0.5
percent in the fourth quarter, as output jumped by 2.1 percent and hours
worked increased by 1.6 percent.
Unit labor costs were up by 2.1 percent year-over-year in the fourth
quarter amid a 2.6 percent jump in hourly compensation.
