The world is currently in a panic over the Zika Virus outbreak in Latin America which, according to health experts, could be a bigger threat than the Ebola epidemic.
The World
Health Organisation (WHO) has subsequently declared the outbreak a global public health emergency.
The outbreak is currently centred in the Americas with only one African country, Cape Verde, recording cases of the disease.
However, here are three reasons why Nigeria is not safe from the Zika Virus:
- It is spread by mosquitoes, specifically the Aedes aegypti species. Mosquitoes are a common menace in Nigeria.
- The World Health Organization has warned that African countries are vulnerable to the spread of the outbreak.
- There are no vaccines against the disease and there is no prospect of any being developed soon.
The
most practical step to stopping the spread of the outbreak at this time
is the combatting of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and destruction of any
possible breeding grounds.
