Read how Nigerians are forced abroad as refugees
Mrs Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, has said that about 100,000 Nigerians are currently living outside Nigeria as refugees.
Thomas-Linda said that Boko Haram attacks have also forced more than one million Nigerians from their homes
as internally dispersed persons (IDPs).
According to her, refugees and IDPs face serious problems that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“More than a million Nigerians have been forced from their homes. Close to 100,000 Nigerians are living outside of Nigeria as refugees,” she said.
“Thousands of families, ordinary people, have been impacted by Boko Haram.
“And these people have serious concerns that urgently need to be addressed,’’ she said.
The U.S. envoy said that her government has been working closely with Nigeria and her neighbouring countries in addressing terrorism in the region.
Thomas-Linda said that there was multifaceted effort in place to deal with security issues in West Africa, along with mechanisms to solver their root causes.
She also said that her government had been working with and providing support for governments in the region through the Multinational Joint Task Force.
“We’re also working with governments to look at broad economic development in the regions affected by Boko Haram by encouraging businesses to invest in those areas,” she said.
“We are also work with the governments to ensure that those who have been victims of Boko Haram receive the assistance that they require to rebuild their lives.”
The Multinational Joint Task Force is a military formation comprised of soldiers from Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, tasked with fighting Boko Haram.
Though the unit receives aid from the United States and other international partners including the EU, it is not without controversy.
There have been frequent reports of Nigerian civilians being killed by the unit’s soldiers, and just last week, the Cameroonian government denied that its soldiers have been killing Nigerians in cross border raids.
