The National Publicity Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has confirmed the selection of former Borno state governor, Ali Modu Sheriff as the party's National Chairman.
Speaking
to newsmen at the party's secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, February 16,
Metuh said all organs of the party - the national caucus, PDP
governors’ forum and the national assembly caucuses agreed to the choice
of Sheriff as the party's leader.
He said before a
formal announcement is made, the decision would first be communicated
to the party's Board of Trustees and subsequently, the National
Executive Committee (NEC)for ratification.
Sheriff's appointment is coming amid allegations that he sponsored the deadly sect, Boko Haram. And Nigerians have taken to Twitter to express shock at the PDP's choice.
The former chairman of the party, Ahmadu Mu’azu, had resigned shortly after the 2015 General elections in which the PDP lost its power grip to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
