US Secretary of State, John Kerry while
addressesing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, has made a
reference to President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.
Kerry in his speech has reacted to the news that Nigerian politicians
pocketed money meant for the purchase of arms meant for the fight
against the insurgency.
He said: “It has been reported that over 50 people including government officials stole over $9billion in Nigeria.
US secretary of state added that money was diverted by generals in the most populous black nation in the world.
“Corruption costs global economy more than a trillion dollars a year and complicates every security, diplomatic, social priority,” Kerry said.
“In far too many countries, plain rank corruption has generated such powerful headwinds that local economies just tread water. Today, corruption has grown at an alarming pace and threatens global growth, global stability, indeed the global future.”
“There is absolutely nothing more demoralizing, disempowering to any citizen than the belief the system is rigged against them. Corruption is a radicalizer because it destroys faith in legitimate authority.”
He stated that about three trillion is lost to corruption a year.
President Muhammadu Buhari was eleccted on the promise to eradicate corruption in Nigeria.
Since he took the office the anti-graft commission launched a lot of probes into the previous government of Goodluck Jonathan. Many Nigerians woder if Buhari will probe the former president.
One of the most biggest fraud that is currently being investigated by the EFCC is $2.1bn arms deal scandal.
Meanwhile, Buhari’s minister of information Lai Mohammed makes fresh revelation about how much was stolen by the Jonathan’s government.
