Nigeria’s
home Eagles got off to an inspiring start of the 2016 CHAN tournament in
Rwanda with a 4-1 win over the Menas of Niger Republic in group C’s
second group game.
The opening goal came courtesy of Osas
Okoro in the 46th minute of play but credit however want to second half
super sub, Chisom Chikatara who in 16 minutes scored a hat-trick in the
Eagles victory as Nigeria went
top of Group C
Nigeria and Niger played out a goalless draw by half time with Niger frustrating the Eagles with their offside tactics.
Price Aggreh and Osas Okoro on both
flanks went behind the Niger defence on a number of occasions but the
final finish did not result in goals.
The second half saw a brand new Nigeria
and within 30 seconds of resumption Osas Okoro had put the Eagles up
1-0. Despite a brave rally led by Zakari Adebayor, Chisom Chikatara
doubled the lead in the 75th minute on his way to his hat trick.
Adebayor struck back for the Mena with
arguably the goal of the tournament when his bomb whizzed past Ezenwa in
the 81st minute. However while they were still celebrating, Chisom
Chikatara, set up by Osas Okoro, slammed in his second goal.
That let the air out of Niger because in the last minute of the game Chikatara added his third, completing the rout.
Meanwhile, former secretary general of
the Nigeria Football Association, NFA, Alhaji Sani Toro has commended
the performance of the team in Kigali.
“This a very excellent result with
Nigeria beating Niger Republic 4-1. We will continue to pray for the
team to win the championship.”
Guinea strikes late to hold Tunisia
Guinea scored late to earn a 2-2 draw with Tunisia in Group C at the 2016 African Nations Championship.
Tunisia’s Ahmed Akaichi scored the opener with an acrobatic finish on 32 minutes and shortly after hit the bar.
Alseny Camara tapped in to level on 39 minutes, but after the break Akaichi restored Tunisia’s lead with a drive.
Guinea escaped when Tunisia’s Zied
Boughattas headed against the bar and they completed a comeback when
Camara hit his second from a corner.
While the point will be celebrated by
Guinea, they will be concerned that Camara was carried from the field
with three minutes remaining and they will hope he is fit to continue in
the tournament.
