APC Warns Dickson Ahead Of Bayelsa Election

As if to exonerate themselves of blame for whatever mayhem that happen on Saturday, January 9, during the rescheduled bye-election in Bayelsa state, the two major contending parties in the election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been accusing each other of plans to perpetrate violence.

The Bayelsa state chapter of the APC yesterday, January 7 warned Governor Seriake Dickson against putting his ambition ahead of the interest of the state.
Tiwe Oruminighe,
the party’s state chairman said Dickson had shown desperation, restlessness and excessive ambition in his quest to get a second term, without considering the interests of the people.
According to him, Dickson’s desperation was becoming too obvious.
Oruminighe said: “The governor is full of deceits. I want Bayelsans to know that the governor is the person who will be doing something but will be shouting to deceive the people about what he is doing.
“In the elections that took place in Ekeremor, Sagbama and Nembe, which he claimed he won, were marred by violence. A minister’s house was under fire, but the governor accused the minister. He did not talk about the safety of the minister. The governor is inciting Bayelsans against Bayelsans. He would call the chiefs and the people and incite them.
“It is a pity that those who are supposed to act as the custodians of our traditional institutions should be part of the problem because of the money they collect.”
The party’s state chairman said Dickson became governor of the state through the back door and that is why he is scared.
Oruminighe said the governor had initially described former militants as criminals, but later turned to them to help him secure a second term.
He claimed that Dickson had resorted to the use of local might to allegedly rig the election, adding that patriotic leaders know when to draw a line between their ambitions and the collective interests of their states.
Meanwhile, over 60 civil society organisations (CSOs) have condemned the APC, PDP and other political parties for showing their bankruptcy of democratic norms through their actions and utterances.
This was contained in an electronic statement signed by its media coordinator, Agianpe Ashang under the aegis of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room.
The group stated that reports of both political sides mobilising and arming youth ahead of the election was a breach of the peace pact made ahead of the election.
The CSO urged political parties and candidates to stop making threats and accusations over the conduct of the polls while also calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to exhibit the strongest possible competence and transparency in its management of the election.
Governor Dickson, candidate of the PDP and Timipre Sylva, candidate of the APC have been engaged in a war of words.
Dickson had asked Sylva to accept defeat or be ready to be humiliated by the people as no militant can deliver him and the APC.
Sylva, on the other hand described Dickson as an embattled, desperate and divisive person. The APC flag bearer said the PDP candidate is not a democrat, alleging that if he was he would not have stopped the salaries of civil servants his aides allegedly voted for in the APC in the gubernatorial contest.
