Sokoto Declares State Of Emergency In Education Sector

Sokoto government Wednesday declared a state of emergency in the state’s education sector, with a pledge to totally turn around the fortune of the sector in the next four years.

According to his media aide, Imam Imam, the decision after the state executive council meeting presided over by Governor
Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Sokoto, the state commissioner of finance, Alhaji Saidu Umar, said henceforth, extra ordinary measures will be implemented within a defined time-frame to achieve desired result.

He said statistics on education in Sokoto was not only worrisome, but regrettable, adding that with the new policy in place, government hopes to reverse the negative trend for the benefit of the state.
“Our objective is to improve enrollment at all stages—basic, secondary and tertiary. By the end of this programme, we will ensure that our quotas in all federal schools are filled.
“We hope to improve quality of teachers by training and retraining, and recruitment of new ones. Any teacher whose capacity did not improve after the training will be reassigned to where his ability will be better needed.The ultimate aim is to improve human capital capacity in the sector, eliminate inequality in access and radically improve numeracy and literacy,” he added.
The commissioner said other measures to be implemented include focusing on infrastructure by building new schools where necessary and improving on existing ones.
Other decisions reached at the council meeting include rendering of emergency assistance to 20,000 rice, onion, wheat and tomato farmers to mitigate the effect of last season’s flood.
Meanwhile, the governor has also urged the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission to promote harmonious coexistence among the various religions in the country.
He stated this when members of the commission, led by the Executive Secretary, John Kennedy Okpara, paid him a courtesy visit in Sokoto.
He said Nigerian pilgrims have general conducted themselves while away on pilgrimage, and commended the Christian Pilgrims Commission for its innovative approach in handling the welfare of pilgrims at home and abroad.
“Peaceful coexistence and religious harmony will be enhanced if clerics and other influential citizens set example to the entire citizenry.
“You can learn a lot from us here in Sokoto because we have maintained peace and tranquility between adherent of many faiths. Peace is a necessary requirement fro development, so i urge you all to support the government in its effort to ensure peace in the country,” the governor added.
In his remarks, Okpara said they were in Sokoto as part of the commission’s sensitisation visits to states of the federation.
