Residents of Bauchi metropolis consume over N1 million worth of sugarcane daily, Chairman of Sugarcane Sellers Association
in Bauchi, Malam Adamu Musa disclosed on Wednesday.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his members sold over 30,000 sticks of sugarcane worth N1million daily.
According
to him, patronage of their product has increased in recent times, just
as supplies from other parts of the state into Bauchi metropolis also
increased tremendously.
He said that about 300
people, made up of sellers and others that provided auxiliary services,
conducted business at the Bauchi sugarcane market.
“There
are about 300 people that work in all aspects of sugar cane processing,
ranging from dealers, those that are experts in cutting it into smaller
parts, as well as people engaged in sharpening knives,’’ he said.
Speaking
on their challenges, Musa lamented that despite the revenue that the
local government earned from the market, the place had been left open
without fence and shades.
"We need shades in
the market so that our visitors will get a place to sleep and rest
because some of them come from far away villages and neighboring states,’’ he said.
He also pleaded to the Government to construct shades and provide pipe borne water at the market.
